Roy Schecter & Dave Wampole were the sole representatives of
the Tamiami Aero Club when they sped off to Key West for brunch on Sat Aug 17.
They flew off in Roy’s Glassair I . Roy flew as Dave’s Student Pilot but he had
to give Dave instructions on how to fit his 6’5” - 200 lb body into a seat made
for a Pilot no bigger than 6’0” - 170 lbs.
Roy has been a Student Pilot for more than 60 years now. He flew
B-24s during WWII but now flies his little plastic “Fighter Plane” all around
Southern Florida. He took his instructor along to see if he could “put his
money were his mouth is” and land this hot little airplane. They both were able
to walk away from his landing (once Dave “unfolded” his legs). By the way, it
was the best landing you never saw.
They ate at “Sloppy Joe’s” to live music and visited a shop called
“Last Flight Out”. On the taxi ride from the airport to town, the cabbie took
Dave directly to the house of a long lost friend from Dave’s Navy-Submarine
days in Key West back some 33 years ago. The amazing part is that Dave could
not remember his name. All that he could remember was that the man was a Judge
for Monroe County, that he had three kids, 2 girls and a son named Teddy. He
knew that they had a Tennis court in the back yard and that he used to ride his
bicycle over from the Submarine Base and the City tennis courts on weekends.
You can never know the adventures you will have or the interesting
people you will meet unless you get out and participate in TAC’s Fly-outs. Even
if it is only for Brunch, come on out and join us!! Bring a friend, even if you
have to “pry” them up from their sofa and into your plane!!
Thanks to Dave Wampole for his interesting account of his Key West adventure. We will be rescheduling Key West at a later date.
Our fly-out to Marathon confirms why we
all live here in South Florida. Sunday,
July 21, 2002 was a picture perfect day for flying. Seven planes landed with 18 people who indulged in a buffet brunch
at The Village Cafe. Omelettes and eggs benedict made on request with a
selection of other delicious foods made this spot a good place to enjoy the
camaraderie for club members and their guests. On the flight home, along the
coast a lone shark was spotted near a sandbar by Captain Don Smith. This made
the ride even more enjoyable for the Smith’s guests Karen and Alan Hayes who
were experiencing their first flight. On the way out to fly home, walking
around the field one could hear Bobbi Lichtiger saying, “Where’s our plane?”. It had been moved, but it may be necessary,
next fly-out, to put a tennis ball on the end of the antenna so it will be
easier to locate.
Congratulations to Bobbi and Walt Orth on the marriage of their
daughter, Chelsea to Magnus
Jennemyr on July 13th. It has been reported that the bride was truly
beautiful and friends and family attended from all over the world. After an
idyllic honeymoon on St. Lucia, the happy couple will reside in London.
Congratulations to the newlyweds and we wish them the best of everything.
Farewell and good luck to Al and MaryAnne
DeMaria who are moving to Georgia. A party was held in their honor the
evening of August 10th, and it was an opportunity for more than 30
Club members to thank Al for his hard work and his efforts through the years,
in helping make this Club what it is today. Paul Stutsman led everyone who was
present in making a champagne toast to Al and MaryAnne, a.k.a.
BearPawMaw@aol.com. A big card, shaped like a bear, was available for people to
write their thoughts to the couple. We
wish them both good times ahead in their new neighborhood. As hosts of this
party, Don and I want to thank everyone for making it so successful. The food
and drink was varied and plentiful as always. We appreciate everybody helping
and making it really easy.
Many of our Club members flew to Ocean Reef on the same weekend of
the Key West fly-out, Sunday, August 18th with the 99ers. Bobbi
Lichtiger reported that there were 39 attendees and the Lowes came by boat.
Because of the rough seas, some people didn’t dive, but everyone still enjoyed
themselves.
Our Annual “Summertime and the
living is easy” Barbeque is still on, but it is now the “Summertime is Over and
the living is Still easy” BBQ.
Due to our summertime heat it was moved to September 14th,
a Saturday night beginning at 1900 hours. It will be held at the Wings Over
Miami Museum and will cost $20.00 per person. This includes the dinner and the
bar beverages. Such a deal!!!!!!!
Nowhere else can you get delicious, plentiful food, drink,
entertainment, speakers, etc. etc. for this price and YOU are part of this
fantastic Club that puts on this great BBQ.
BUT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Reservations are required by September 10th
so please be sure to put this date on your calendar and contact either
Cruise Director: Sue Bodley at 305-385-1958
or sue@bodley.net or Bobbi Lichtiger at 305 444-3458 or bltiger@bellsouth.net.
Everyone come on out and have a terrific, “cooler” time. Bring family and
friends but please, please make those reservations by September 10th.
We really look forward to seeing all the members of our Club...
And talking about members, our
numbers are growing and growing. The membership is up to 52, and that is not
counting partners and spouses. So we’ve got lots and lots of people involved.
We would like everyone to participate in some activity and we need your input.
The Cruise Directors are busy setting up activities, based on your interests and
desires. Contact them with your thoughts or come on out to the BBQ where they
will be sharing the upcoming Club events.
Paul Stutsman reported that Fran Sargent had the honor of being one
of the only women to attend a QB meeting; she gave an informative and
interesting presentation. Congratulations Fran.
T-shirts and Badges are on sale with the Club logo. Contact Yale
Mosk for the shirts at http://tamiamiaeroclub.org/ for more information.
Our next Board meeting, which is open to all Club members, will be
held at 1800 hours on Tuesday, September 10th at the Steak ‘n Ale on 97th
Avenue near Kendall Drive (88th St.). Come out and join the Board in
“breaking bread” together.
Until next time, fly safely.
