Several months have passed since the last newsletter but lots of
events and activities have been keeping our members busy.
Sun ‘n Fun April 7th –13th, 2002.
Walt Orth (T6)
and Sam Sax (CJ6A) flew in the air shows Sunday through Tuesday. Charlie
Clements was present with his PBY-5A Catalina. This was a first outing for
Charlie and his crew after an extensive renovation. His aircraft drew a lot of
attention and was a big hit at the show. Wednesday was the big warbird flyout
BBQ at Leeward Air Ranch, after which Sam and Walt flew back to KTMB in
formation via Okeechobee. Fred Schlafly and Sheila Bennett flew in and tented
on the field. Other than a tent
blow-down in a rainstorm, all went well. A good time was had by all. Attendance
overall seemed to be down (according to all TAC members who attended through
the week). Sun ‘n Fun was a safe event this year with only a few mishaps before
the show started and none during the show. (Submitted by Walt Orth).
On Sunday April 21,
2002 a fly-in to Everglades City was held in conjunction with the
99ers. More than a dozen planes and a
car or two transported over 32 people to the Rod and Reel Club for lunch. Then
a large group of people remained to take airboats on a journey around the local
area to investigate the native dwellers...such as large alligators, anhingas,
etc. Those on this adventure reported a really good time.

The Ft. Lauderdale Beach Air and Sea Show, May 4th-5th,
2002 filled the skies and seas with exciting demonstrations. Thousands
were on hand, including Sue and Dave Bodley, Fred Schlafly, Sheila Bennett, and
Bobbi and Monte Lichtiger. They reported that this year was a year to see the
fly-bys. Even though it was crowded, it was worth it.
Memorial Day at
Wings Over Miami.
This was a big event. Approximately 1500 plus folks turned out for
Saturday and Sunday for the Wings Over Miami fly-in. This was held in concert
with a motorcycle rally sponsored by Southwest Cycle. Food, WACO and Helicopter
rides, and lots of formation flying for the crowds. Aircraft included MIG 15,
L-29 Dauphine, Fouga Magister jets plus T-28’s, T-6’s, BT-13, CJ-6A’s, YAK 52,
PBY-5A Catalina. Many members were flying and helping out: Fred
Schlafly...Safety Officer and YAK 52 Pilot, Vinnie Tirado...YAK 52 Pilot plus
Managing Director of the Museum, Delia Tirado...Food Concession, Larry
Ploucha...Legal Counsel for the Museum and YAK 52 Pilot, Sam Sax...CJ-6A and
YAK Lead Pilot, Gary Pope...CJ-6A, Walt Orth...T6 Pilot and T6 Lead,
Sec’y/Treasurer for the Museum, Charlie Clements in his remarkable PBY-5A
Catalina, who spent most of the day in the air, giving rides, plus giving
ground tours of his aircraft. Walt Orth, Vinnie Tirado, Gary Pope, and Sam Sax
also participated in volunteer and press day on Friday, May 24th
giving formation rides. A great day for the Museum and for Tamiami Aero Club.

The fly-out to Walkers Cay, Bahamas was another successful, foreign
adventure. This overseas yearly trip is a favorite for those who go. Great
flight over and back with five airplanes.
Walt and Bobbie Orth, Monty and Bobbi Lichtiger and their friend Dr.
Gene Negal, David and Sue Bodley, Fred Schlafly and Sheila Bennett, and Ursula
Davidson and her two friends Linda Evans and Laurie Saginak. The SCUBA diving
was great! Fred, Sheila and Gene dove the world famous shark dive with a ton of
sharks!!! Walt, Monte and David went
charter fishing. Happy Hours were great as usual.
Our next fly-out is scheduled for Sebring, on June
22nd. Further information will be forthcoming. So please check
the e-mail.
Marathon is our fly-out destination for July 21.
Our Summer-time dinner will be held on August 17th. Our Cruise Directors,
Bobbi Lichtiger and Sue Bodley are busy working on the plans.
We are all glad to hear that Sue Bodley is home recovering from her
gall bladder surgery and that everything came out fine.
ALL members are encouraged to join the Board for the monthly
