This is the first month of 2002 and it is hard to believe that the last month of 2001 has flown by as quickly as it did. Many aviation activities were going on and our members were very much involved.

Sue and David Bodley had fun flying to Sebring for lunch Saturday, Dec. 1st by themselves. No other members participated in the Club’s fly-out. This destination will come up again in the future and perhaps more members of the Club will be able to participate.

The grand opening of Wings Over Miami (formerly Weeks Air Museum) was a great success. Wings Over Miami is a not-for-profit air museum that displays and flies Military and Classic aircraft as well as honors Military and Civilian Aviation pioneers. Over 1500 guests attended the two-day event (Dec.8&9). Highlights included flight demos by a MIG 15 and F86F, Korean War vintage fighters, both based at the Museum.  Present for the opening was Major General Frederick “Boots” Blesse, a double ace (ten kills) in the Korean War in F86 Sabres and the author of “No Guts, No Glory”, the first fighter tactics manual for the Air Force published in 1955 as a classified document. Formation flying occurred on three occasions on both days and missing man formations were flown in honor of the September 11th victims and fallen heroes. Many performers and participants are Tamiami Aero Club members: Fred Schlafly (YAK), Walt Orth (T6), Gary Pope (CJ6), Sam Sax (CJ6), Larry Ploucha (YAK), Vinnie Tirado (YAK & T6), Al DeMaria, Paul Stutsman, David and Sue Bodley, and Sheila Bennett. Orth, Stutsman, Ploucha, and Tirado are Museum Board members; Schlafly is the Air Safety Officer; the Bodleys are web masters for the Museum website (www.WingsOverMiami.com); and Al DeMaria is a volunteer coordinator and supporter. Thanks too, to Lynn Perrine, Bobbie Orth, and Mike Handrahan for their volunteer work. A highlight for Sue Bodley was her chance to redeem her prize of a ride in a T6 with Walt Orth. This was a door prize she had won at the Annual Summer BBQ.

The annual Holiday Party tradition was another evening of fun when more than forty people joined together, bringing food for a bountiful buffet and gifts to exchange. And of course, we want to thank Ingrid Johnson for again making it possible to have our  Saturday night, December 15th Holiday Festivities at her Clubhouse. And thank you to all our members who helped organize this affair. Well done!!!!!!!!!!!  Sheila Bennett had a very good evening. Not only did she pick the number “one” in the Gift exchange allowing her the choice of all the gifts at the end, but she also won a 2002 Club Membership as a door prize. Fran Sargent also won a door prize of a bottle of liquid refreshment. It was so nice to see so many people celebrating together.

If you were not able to make it we certainly hope to see you at The Annual Dinner and Business Meeting which will be held Friday evening, January 25th, 2002. This year it will be held at The University of Miami Faculty Club ( with Larry Wilson from  the MIA Tower as the guest speaker). The prepaid price will be $28.00/ person and $30.00 at the door.  There will be a cash bar. Please send your check to Walt Orth at 321 Los Pinos Place, Coral Gables, Fl. 33143-6426.   Please, please make your reservations early so that we have a count for the facility. We would like you to let us know by January 21st of your intentions. Thank you for your early response. Also happening in January will be the fly-out to Key West (EYW) on Saturday, January 12th. If you wish more information about this trip for lunch and the optional stay-over room rates, etc, contact  Sue Bodley at 305-385-1958 or sue@bodley.net . What a terrific way to start the New Year.

Other wonderful events and activities are being planned by our Cruise Directors, Sue Bodley and Bobbi Lichtiger, throughout the coming months. Also, other organizations are planning events too. More information will be forthcoming as the dates approach. You can contact either of them via telephone or e-mail for more details or check the Club website. So just jot these dates into your calendar now so you will be prepared:

February 14-17th, 2002: The Collings Foundation B24 Liberator (“Dragon and his Tail”) and B-17 Flying Fortress (“909”) will be on display at Wings Over Miami. Tours and flights will be available and are tax deductible as the Foundation is a 501(c)3 not for profit corporation. Walt Orth is a plane sponsor for “909”, in memory of Bobbie’s father, Ralph, who served as air crew in B-17’s in WWII.

President Fred Schlafly recommends that all TAC members log on to www.AOPA.org for updates concerning information important to everyone in the aviation community.  Recently, two updates of significance came out about intercept procedures and Aeroshell Oil.

Club badges and shirts can be ordered, and the order-form can be printed off the Club website. So don’t delay and keep the orders coming. Be part of the group.

If you haven’t yet sent in your membership renewal for 2002, please do so. An application can be printed off the e-mail web page. If you don’t have any changes for your application and you just want to send in your $25.00, that is okay too. Just send it to the Treasurer, Walt Orth at 321 Los Pinos Place, Coral Gables, Fl. 33143-6426. We encourage new members too. So share this information with your friends, relatives, colleagues, and even to strangers who might be interested!!!!!!!!!!!

Our next Tamiami Aero Club meeting will be January 25th, 2002 beginning at 1830 hours at The University of Miami Faculty Club.  We will be electing the 2002 TAC Board members.
